Description:
On May 27, 2009, three astronauts launched to the International Space Station to complete the crew of Expedition 20.

Expedition 20 was the first six-person crew to live and work at the space station for a long-duration stay. Russian cosmonaut Roman Romanenko, Canadian astronaut Robert Thirsk and Belgian astronaut Frank De Winne lifted off on a Soyuz rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Two days later, they arrived at the space station, where they were greeted by the Russian commander Gennady Padalka, NASA astronaut Michael Barratt and Japanese astronaut Koichi Wakata. For the first time in ISS history, the space station was packed to its full capacity of six crewmembers. Previous Expedition crews consisted of three people. But ever since Expedition 20, the space station has continued to support crews of six. Because the Soyuz capsules that ferry people to and from the ISS can only fit three people, only half of each Expedition crew can launch at a time. This is why it too two launches to get the full crew of Expedition 20 to the space station.

On May 25, 2008, NASA's Phoenix lander arrived on Mars.

Phoenix was NASA's sixth mission to successfully land on Mars, and it was the first mission to touch down near the planet's north pole. The objective for this mission was to look for evidence of water ice below the Martian surface. This would help scientists study the history of climate change on Mars. The mission would also look for clues about whether the Red Planet could have been habitable or even hosted some kind of alien life in the past. Phoenix spent almost 10 months flying to Mars before it plunged into the atmosphere going close to 13,000 miles per hour. Parachutes slowed it down to about 5 miles per hour, and Phoenix gently landed after a 7-minute descent. Three Mars orbiter missions adjusted their orbits so they could be in a good position to watch the landing. This was the first time that a spacecraft's landing on another planet was caught on camera.

On May 23, 2017, NASA astronauts Peggy Whitson and Jack Fischer took an urgent and unplanned spacewalk to replace a broken data relay box outside of the International Space Station.

The problematic device, known as a multiplexer/demultiplexer, had been installed less than two months earlier during another spacewalk by Peggy Whitson and Shane Kimbrough. Two multiplexer/demultiplexers are fixed to the outside of the space station’s truss segment, and they’re responsible controlling vital systems like the solar arrays, radiators, cooling loops and other robotic equipment. That second unit kicked in as a backup when the newer one failed, so the station itself wasn’t affected. However, NASA had to scramble to install another spare to make sure the space station would be prepared in case the second computer failed as well. So, Whitson built a new multiplexer/demultiplexer using spare parts. It took the spacewalkers 2 hours and 46 minutes to swap out the boxes, and they had some time left to enjoy the view of Earth from space, which Fischer said was “epically amazeballs.\

On May 26, 1983, the European Space Agency launched its first X-ray Observatory into space.

The spacecraft was called EXOSAT, which stands for European X-ray Observatory SATellite. The mission was entirely devoted to studying the universe by looking exclusively at X-ray radiation. Human eyes aren't capable of seeing light in X-ray wavelengths. By looking for X-rays using satellites and telescopes, astronomers can locate and study high-energy sources of radiation. This includes supernovas, active galactic nuclei, galaxy clusters, black holes, neutron stars, white dwarfs, and binary stars. EXOSAT launched on a Thor-Delta rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. It was put in a highly eccentric elliptical orbit that took it around the Earth once every 90 hours. It made several big discoveries during its three years in orbit. Its most famous discovery was something called quasi-periodic oscillation in X-ray binary stars. In other words, the X-ray light coming from those stars flickers periodically with very high precision like a ticking clock. The EXOSAT mission ended when the satellite deorbited and burned up in the atmosphere, but scientists are still analyzing the data and learning new things from it.
