Americans admit to forgetting to brush their teeth five times per week.

That’s according to a new survey of 2,000 U.S. adults, which also found that it’s not only the toothbrush that’s being forgotten — they also admit to skipping out on the floss and mouthwash four days each week.

Despite their forgetful nature, an astounding 92% of Americans do believe that their oral care routine is important to their overall health.

In fact, 51% believe that oral hygiene is so important that they’d speak to a loved one if they noticed they had poor oral care habits or bad breath.

Taking that a step further, respondents would also be willing to look inside their mouth (32%) or even lend them their toothbrush if needed (14%).

Conducted by OnePoll on behalf of LISTERINE® Clinical Solutions for World Oral Health Day, results found that a majority (75%) of Americans agree that there is a “right” way to care for your oral health. This includes no-brainers like going to the dentist regularly (81%), brushing your teeth multiple times a day (75%) and using mouthwash (60%).

Those sentiments toward oral care extend beyond physical appearance, as 89% of Americans surveyed agreed that they feel more confident when they feel good about their oral health.

But for all the right approaches Americans are taking, there are always some that are atypical. When asked the most unconventional oral care method they’ve witnessed, respondents outlined, “using a washcloth to clean their teeth,” or “using fishing line to floss.”

One-quarter of respondents even admit that they are embarrassed by the current state of their oral health.

“While it’s promising to see that people are keeping dental health top of mind, as a dentist, I encourage more commitment to maintaining each of the critical steps of the oral hygiene routine — all of which are crucial to healthy teeth and gums,” said Dr. Marie M. Jackson, dentist and LISTERINE Clinical Solutions partner. “Brushing, flossing, and rinsing with mouthwash twice a day, every day really are our best tools when it comes to fighting and preventing common oral health issues.”

The survey revealed that in the last year, Americans have experienced dental woes such as sensitive teeth (34%), plaque build-up (28%) and bleeding gums (24%).

And for some respondents, these issues are chronic: one in five (21%) said they suffer from oral pain or discomfort in their teeth and gums at least every other week.

Perhaps because of how common these dental issues are, almost all respondents (93%) indicate that they understand the importance of addressing bleeding gums for their overall health.

This may be why three in four (76%) aim to seek out products that are catered to their specific oral needs.

Finding products that fit their needs is one way that respondents are prioritizing their oral health — and motivators to do so include preventing bad breath (73%), cavities (72%) and avoiding gum disease (68%).

“It can be alarming when experiencing dental issues like seeing blood in the sink after brushing or flossing,” said Dr. Jackson. “However, there are ways to tackle these problems, and I’m glad to see the data trends toward a top recommendation of mine, which starts with personalizing your home care routine with products that can help suit your unique dental health needs for a fresher and cleaner mouth.”

Survey methodology:
This random double-opt-in survey of 2,000 general population Americans was commissioned by LISTERINE® Clinical Solutions between Feb. 23 and Feb. 29, 2024. It was conducted by market research company OnePoll, whose team members are members of the Market Research Society and have corporate membership to the American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) and the European Society for Opinion and Marketing Research (ESOMAR).

A woman has befriended a family of robins - who now land on her head and sing to her.

Dawn Kiff, 58, began working as a cleansing operative in Shaldon, Devon, nine months ago, spending a lot of time in and around the heavily forested Smuggler’s Tunnel as a result.

But over the past month, she has become a familiar face in the village – after befriending the robins by feeding them during her coffee breaks.

And not only do they now pay her regular visits - they have even got to know her routine.

Dawn said: “I first noticed them back in October when the leaves were coming down and I had to clean around the tunnel.

“There’s a lot of wildlife up there, but the robins were sort of following me around. My mum passed away in September, so it came at a really nice time to be honest.

“It was only about six weeks ago, so I decided to sit down before I went to go and clean the tunnel. I had a coffee and a croissant – and this little bird, that I’d called Rosy, sat next to me.

“I thought she was very friendly, so I ripped off a bit of my croissant and put it down next to me and it ate it.

“It just seemed to hang around, so I gave it a little bit more and it ate that and then flew off.

“The next day, it was there waiting for me again. By the third day, it was landing on my boot, so I took my phone out to take a picture of it and it just stood there.

“By the fourth day, I’d managed to get it on my hand – it was a really quick process, and I was shocked!

“I made it a little routine – once that happened, I made sure to take my breaks before and after I clean the tunnel.

“It just got friendlier and friendlier, until another bird turned up – and it was feeding it!”

Dawn quickly realized that the bird she had been feeding was actually a male – and the bird he was feeding was his mate.

She renamed the pair Robby and Rosy – and was quickly surprised by a new addition to their family.

Amazed by the friendliness of the pair of birds, Dawn began posting photos and videos of their interactions on Facebook, quickly attracting the attention of village residents.

“These little robins, it turns out, have had a chick! I discovered the male was feeding a chick in the tree, so now they’ve got a little family,” said Dawn.

“I started to take pictures of them, because they were so tame, and I couldn’t believe it.

“I was showing some of the villagers, and they said I should put them on social media. The response I got was massive, I was really surprised.

“For the last two weeks, I’ve had the whole family around me and I’ve had some really magical times.

“On Friday, it was raining, and I had my hood up. I carry seeds with me now, so I put a bit of seed on my head, and it landed on my head, grabbed it, and flew off to feed the chick.

“The next thing I know, I was walking, and it landed on my head and started singing to me!”

The robins have now become minor celebrities in Shaldon – with residents even volunteering to look after the family while Dawn goes on holiday.

For Dawn, the birds have become her favourite part of her work day – and when her Shaldon route ends next month, she still plans to come back and visit Robby and Rosy.

“I look forward to seeing them every day,” she said.

“But they will be alright – they’re wild animals at the end of the day, and they’re always there and safe when I come back from the weekends.”

Comedians Matt Lucas, Elis James, and Andrew Mensah have performed a hilarious spoof sketch of Ryan Gosling's 'I'm Just Ken' singalong at the Oscars with the lyrics changed to focus on Harry Kane's woes at Bayern Munich.

The England captain swapped London for Germany in the summer as he moved to Munich seeking to end his wait for a first-team trophy, but things haven't quite worked out.

Despite Kane starring with a sensational 36 goals in 34 appearances during his debut season in Germany, the 30-year-old faces the prospect of another trophyless season.

Bayern still have a chance of winning the Champions League after being drawn against Arsenal in the competition's quarter-finals, but their quest for another German top-flight title appears over with Bayer Leverkusen maintaining a 10-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga.

The sketch was crafted ahead of Friday's episode of Sky’s Fantasy Football League and saw a recreation of Gosling's Oscars performance.

Gosling was the male star of last year's Hollywood blockbuster 'Barbie' and put on a brilliantly choreographed rendition of his song 'I am Ken' from the movie at the 96th Academy Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday.

His routine has now been replicated hilariously by the Sky show hosts with Lucas occupying the role of Gosling in his performance modified to focus on Kane's campaign in Germany.

Featuring Kane, Lucas starts by saying: 'It doesn't seem to matter what I do, I'll finish number two.

He continues: 'Despite how much I score oh I find it so confusing who is Leverkusen, even though I am keen and eager I won't win the Bundesliga.

Another flashpoint in the routine sees him state: 'I'm just Kane and I'm trophyless again,' while walking up onto the stage.

The show also features darts prodigy Luke Littler throwing a cheese and onion pie at England cricket legend Stuart Broad.
