Some years later, and a few miles up the A1 from Thirsk, Gormley’s youngest brother Anthony – also an old Ampleforthian - would also produce work that blended elements of the White Horse with certain religious overtones – the Angel of The North quickly became one of the UKs most-loved works of public art.

In parallel with making furniture for the home, John Gormley also began to produce ecclesiastical furniture – again, the Ampleforth education clearly played a part, a feeling for church buildings being close to Gormley’s heart.

“It’s a side of the business which is still incredibly important to us today,\

This traditional red phone box in a Yorkshire village is quite possibly one of the smallest art galleries in the world - at least according to the locals.

The K6 kiosks have become an emblem of British culture signifying a vital communication tool in its heyday. Until the rise of mobile phone usage made these landmarks a thing of the past.

As it was no longer in use, the phone box in Horbury, Wakefield was under threat back in 2018. This was until Horbury Civic Society purchased it off BT for £1.

Villagers count on perilous cable cars in Turkey's tea mountains

Kasim Karaosman, 90, carefully hoists himself onto a rickety cable car – which he made himself more than 50 years ago – before the contraption shoots him 300 meters across a deep mountain valley to his home. The makeshift machines are essential in these villages in northeast Turkey, where locals harvest tea leaves in fields inaccessible by car. But a string of deaths and hair-raising accidents has sent a shudder of fear through the community.

Videoby AFP

Subscribe to The Manila Times Channel - https://tmt.ph/YTSubscribe
Visit our website at https://www.manilatimes.net

Follow us:
Facebook - https://tmt.ph/facebook
Instagram - https://tmt.ph/instagram
Twitter - https://tmt.ph/twitter
DailyMotion - https://tmt.ph/dailymotion

Subscribe to our Digital Edition - https://tmt.ph/digital

Check out our Podcasts:
Spotify - https://tmt.ph/spotify
Apple Podcasts - https://tmt.ph/applepodcasts
Amazon Music - https://tmt.ph/amazonmusic
Deezer: https://tmt.ph/deezer
Tune In: https://tmt.ph/tunein

#TheManilaTimes
#worldnews
#cablecar
#rurallife

Second landslide, disease outbreak loom at site of Papua New Guinea disaster

Authorities fear a second landslide and a disease outbreak are looming at the scene of Papua New Guinea’s mass-casualty disaster because of water streams and bodies trapped beneath the tons of debris that swept over a village, a United Nations official said Tuesday.

A mass of boulders, earth and splintered trees devastated Yambali in the South Pacific nation’s remote highlands when a limestone mountainside sheared away Friday. The blanket of debris has become more unstable with recent rain and streams trapped between the ground and rubble, said Serhan Aktoprak, chief of the International Organization for Migration’s mission in Papua New Guinea.

The UN agency has officials at the scene in Enga province helping shelter 1,600 displaced people. The agency estimates 670 villagers died, while Papua New Guinea’s government has told the United Nations it thinks more than 2,000 people were buried.

Photos by AP

Subscribe to The Manila Times Channel - https://tmt.ph/YTSubscribe
Visit our website at https://www.manilatimes.net

Follow us:
Facebook - https://tmt.ph/facebook
Instagram - https://tmt.ph/instagram
Twitter - https://tmt.ph/twitter
DailyMotion - https://tmt.ph/dailymotion

Subscribe to our Digital Edition - https://tmt.ph/digital

Check out our Podcasts:
Spotify - https://tmt.ph/spotify
Apple Podcasts - https://tmt.ph/applepodcasts
Amazon Music - https://tmt.ph/amazonmusic
Deezer: https://tmt.ph/deezer
Tune In: https://tmt.ph/tunein

#TheManilaTimes
#worldnews
#papua
#landslide
