One in four Americans have no idea if they'll get a tax refund this year, according to new research.

A survey of 2,000 U.S. adults looked at how many are thinking ahead when it comes to their taxes and found the percentage of those who aren’t sure if they’ll get a tax refund is up to 25% from 20% last year.

On the other hand, 43% anticipate getting a tax refund in 2024, slightly up from 40% last year.

The average respondent who thinks they will be getting a tax refund estimates that they’ll get back $2,023.50 this year, down from the average of $2,338.40 last year.

Conducted by OnePoll for Cricket Wireless, the annual tax time survey found that two in three Americans said that if they received a tax refund in 2024, they would use it in a more “mature” way than years past (67%).

Of those who anticipate a tax refund, three in five are relying on that extra income and 36% plan on saving it, compared to just 26% last year.

Half of those who have gone through a major life event like putting contributions into a retirement plan (17%) or getting a new job (11%) also said that they would use their tax refund to help financially support new changes.

However, a quarter of Americans admit to feeling stressed leading up to the tax deadline (28%).

What’s causing that stress? For many, it’s uncertainty over what to expect.

For instance, of those who experienced life changes over the past year, such as getting married or having a kid, only 38% knew that these events will affect their tax return.

Knowledge also plays a role in respondents’ uncertainty, as one in five couldn’t define common tax terms like “adjusted gross income,” “dependent” or “filing status.”

The economy is also a culprit for those who are less certain about their finances this year.

Only a third of Americans think the 2024 economy will be better than the previous year (34%), with 45% sharing that this perspective impacts their decision to spend or save their tax refund.

To combat this, a majority of respondents have done more budgeting (68%) and 44% have spent less money, overall.

“High inflation and an unpredictable economy make many Americans feel uncertain around tax season,” said Tony Mokry, chief marketing officer at Cricket Wireless. “For many, this is the only time of year that they receive a windfall and how they treat these funds oftentimes sets the tone for their year financially. We continue to encourage consumers to look for value where they can, particularly on recurring bills like phone plans.”

However, those surveyed are taking control of their finances, keeping track of them on their phone (51%).

While only half of respondents last year used a banking app (52%), that number is up to 92% of those who use finance apps today.

Mobile wallet (48%) and investing apps (42%) were also among the most common finance apps last year, and are still popular among respondents this year (66% and 39%, respectively).

Credit score management apps have also climbed in popularity (39%) and one in five have a tax filing app, too (18%).

To make use of their resources, nearly a quarter of those who own a smartphone will use it to file their taxes in 2024 (23%).

“It's reassuring to see that more people are using their phones to manage their finances,” said Tony Mokry, chief marketing officer at Cricket Wireless. “It's difficult to stay on top of it all, but having access at your fingertips takes the headache out of managing money, making it easier than ever to track your spending, budget effectively, and work towards your financial goals.”

Survey methodology:
This random double-opt-in survey of 2,000 general population Americans was commissioned by Cricket Wireless between Jan. 11 and Jan. 16, 2024. It was conducted by market research company OnePoll, whose team members are members of the Market Research Society and have corporate membership to the American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) and the European Society for Opinion and Marketing Research (ESOMAR).

The Dallas Mavericks (34-27) entered their second game of a three-game home stand in Dallas as they welcomed the Indiana Pacers (34-28). Both teams came into this game with almost the same record, the Pacers having one more loss than Dallas. The Mavs are currently eighth in the west and are trying to secure a playoff spot. Dallas has now lost five of their last six matchups after losing to the Pacers 137-120.

The first half was neck and neck. Luka Doncic had 17 points midway through the second quarter and that was pretty much all Dallas had going on offense, everyone else was pretty quiet. The Pacers stayed in the game due to the help of their bench players. Their bench players had 36 points going into the half and played a big role in their lead going into the locker room, led by Bennedick Mathurin with 14 points.

Doncic finished the half with 28 points.

The Pacers took a 74-70 lead at the half.

Indiana came out hot and took the third quarter. The Pacers went on a 19-6 run to open up the third quarter giving them a 18-point lead over Dallas. This happened last game for the Mavs. They seem to get into a slump in the second half and see some significant deficits because of it. The Mavs were down 19 to the 76’ers on Sunday, they ended up coming back and only losing by four but they were down double-digits almost the whole second half.

Dallas did do better this game with turnovers. They only had seven entering the fourth quarter, last game they had 12 in the first half alone.

Indiana had 69 points off the bench tonight.

Indiana took the third quarter outscoring Dallas 32-18 giving them an 18-point lead entering the fourth quarter.

The lead carried well into the fourth quarter, Pacers having the largest lead of the night of 20. With 6:32 remaining in regulation Indiana had a 14-point lead.

Luka Doncic led all scorers with 39 points, 10 rebounds, and 11 assists. He now has 41 triple-doubles in his career when scoring 30 points or more.

Kyrie Irving had 23 points, seven rebounds, and three assists.

Nine players scored in double figures for the Pacers and outscored the mavs on the bench 69-32.

The Mavs will be back in American Airlines Center on Thursday to face the Miami Heat at 6:30 PM.

Novak Djokovic has been caught in an on-court meltdown at Indian Wells before suffering his biggest defeat in 16 years to Luca Nardi.

Ranked 123 in the world by the ATP, Nardi is the lowest-ranked player to beat Djokovic at the ATP Masters 1000 or Grand Slam level, the Italian coming out 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victor.

Djokovic was naturally the overwhelming favorite for the tie as a five-time champion of the event and record 24-time Grand Slam winner, against the 20-year-old who only made the competition as a lucky loser.

After a poor start by his herculean standards, the Serbian great fought back in the second to level the scoreboards, before an entertaining third set that saw both players excel went the way of the underdog, sealing victory with an ace.

However, one moment in particular from the second set caught the attention, with Djokovic left outraged with the umpire after not receiving a call in his favor - and he proceeded to make his opinion clear to the official in the chair.

At 2-0 up in the second set, Djokovic served down the line to Nardi who looked to play a drop shot back and catch out his opponent.

The shot - intended to land as close to the net as possible on the other side of the court - was executed well, so well that Nardi thought he had underhit it and appeared to stop running.

Djokovic then returned the shot to the tramline, but stood rooted to the spot as Nardi returned across the court, the Serbian stood in the center of the court looking bewildered with his hands out to his side, clearly shocked that Nardi had offered a shot in retort.

'He hit the ball and then stopped!' he said to the umpire, sparking a furious debate over whether Djokovic should have been awarded the point on the grounds of a hindrance.

A hindrance in tennis is any deliberate attempt from one player to another to prevent them from making a shot.

'He reacted to the call, he didn't make the call he didn't stop the point,' argued the umpire. 'Just because he stops, doesn't mean the point stops.

'Just because he stops doesn't mean the point stops? What are you talking about?' a furious Djokovic retorted.

'You saw the reaction, he stopped. He stopped and that's it. He confused me completely and I stopped as well. How can you not make that judgment? Are you kidding me?'

The umpire then patiently asked whether Djokovic was looking for a hindrance to be called in his favor, to which the 36-year-old replied: 'Of course!'

The two continued to go back and forth on the court, with the umpire maintaining that there were no grounds for a hindrance to be awarded, with agitated boos emerging from the crowd.

Ultimately the call went the way of Nardi, and the game soon got back underway. It wouldn't prove too much of a hurdle as Djokovic looked to have recovered from the opening set blip to fight back and take the second set 6-3, but could not find a way past the youngster in the third.
